Turner’s farm shop is now in its fourth generation having been started as a working farm by my grandparents in 1926. They sold fresh milk, fruit from the orchard, fresh free range eggs and meat, potatoes and seasonal vegetables from the kitchen garden and a range of Nan’s own chutneys, fruit pies and pickles.
The hay stack my grandad and grandmother are standing in front of was built by grandad and thatched by a local lad who also wove two straw ducks to sit on either end of the stack. I wish they had managed to get this in the picture. It was the signiture used by the thatcher to advertise that he had thatched the roof.
During the war the farm was narrowly missed by the German bombers as they shed the last of the bombs over Bristol blowing out the windows as my grandmother sheltered under the kitchen table.
My parents took over the running of the farm in the early '70s converting the dairy into the farm shop. We sold local produce, our own cooking, jams, pickles, chutneys etc. and still farmed the land and kept a herd of milking cows.
In the late '80s, the whole farm was nearly taken by the ring road that now circles Bristol but some last minute planning changes meant that the farm was saved but not before we had re-homed all of our animal's. The next few years saw us re-establishing the shop with my brother and I taking over some of the responsibilities in the late '90s
Now employing the fourth generation of the family the farm is going from strength to strength selling local produce wherever possible and supporting local small business.
